Sunday April 22 2012 is Earth Day, a holiday to make awareness for our planet’s natural resources and to help clean up our planet. There are so many festivities for Earth Day across the Jersey Shore. Here is your guide to Earth Day 2012 in Ocean County:
Brick Goes Green (Again)
The Second Annual Brick Township Green Fair will take place on Saturday, April 28 at Veterans Memorial Middle School, 105 Hendrickson Avenue, from 11am – 3pm. The Green Fair is open to all citizens and is free to attend.
The Green Fair is a community-wide Earth Day celebration designed to educate, enlighten and encourage people of all ages, incomes and backgrounds to adopt a more environmentally and socially responsible lifestyle. There will be information on hand, exhibits, vendors and much more. And Ocean Happening will have a table at this great community event (so make sure you stop by and say “Hello”).
The Green Fair is hosted by the Mayors Advisory Committee on Renewable Energy, the Brick Township Public Schools, the Brick Township Chamber of Commerce, the Brick Township Municipal Utilities Authority, the Brick Township Department of Parks and Recreation and the Brick Township Environmental Commission.
Earth Day is a great opportunity to clean our planet. In Ocean County, that means its time to clean our beaches. On April 21st from 9AM-12:30PM, Clean Ocean Action will be sponsoring beach sweeps across Ocean County beaches, including Bay Head, Beachwood, Brick, Lakewood, Lavallette, Mantoloking, Normandy Beach, Ocean Gate, Ortley Beach, Point Pleasant Borough, Point Pleasant Beach, Seaside Heights and Seside Park. Plus, Alliance for a Living Ocean with have beach cleanups across Long Beach Island on Sunday April 22nd at 10AM.
Earth Day for Kids
Earth Day can be a fun and educational celebration for kids. On April 21st from 11AM-1PM, join the Kidgits Club in the Ocean County Mall in Toms River for an Earth Day party featuring crafts, games and prizes. On April 22nd from 1PM-4PM at Jenkinsons Aquarium in Point Plesant Beach check out “Party for the Planet”, where kids can learn about ways they can help save the planet.
OCC Marks Earth Day
Ocean County College in Toms River celebrates Earth Day from Monday-Thursday this week. There will be panel discussions, presentations and screenings every afternoon this week in Bartlett Hall and in the Solar Lounge. For more information, call 732-255-0400 ext. 2272.
The Point Pleasant Borough Environmental Commission is excited to announce that the 2012 Earth Day Celebration to be held at Riverfront Park is shaping up nicely with nearly 60 exhibitors confirmed. The event is scheduled for April 21st from 12pm to 4pm (raindate is April 22). This is the 9th Earth Day Celebration hosted by the Commission and they are expecting a great turnout. The event showcases vendors of green products/ideas, environmental organizations, and local and small businesses.
There will be rides and games provided by Spacewalk of Ocean County, food provided by Jersey Shore BBQ, Shore Fresh Seafood, and Cool Concessions Ice Cream, and music performed by the Soup Sandwich Band, the Sherman Brothers with Ed Austin and a special performance by Vin-Taze. Other special events include the ‘Catwalk’ Fundraiser by Point Paws, Warriors of Wrestling Earth Day wrestling event, the Clean Ocean Action Spring Beach Sweeps beach clean up at River and Maxson Ave. (9am to 12:30) as well as many other events.
The theme for this year’s 4th and 5th Grade T-shirt poster contest is “Strive to be Mosquito Free”, concentrating on what to do at home to safely control mosquitoes. The focal point for this year’s Earth Day theme will be to teach the uses of alternative methods for mosquito control and to stress that ‘Mosquito Control Starts at Home’. The Commission will officially present the awards to the winners of the T-shirt contest as well as announce the two recipients of the Commission’s scholarships at 12:30.
