Mark Geiger, a 39-year-old resident of Beachwood, becomes the first American referee in the World Cup in 12 years. Prior to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Geiger has officiated in Major League Soccer since 2004. MLS named Geiger their Referee of the Year in 2011. In 2012, Geiger was also a referee at the Summer Olympics in London.
In addition, Geiger was a math teacher at Lacey High School. In 2009, he was a recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching.
In the 2014 FIFA World Cup, his first assignment as a referee will be in the June 14th game between Greece and Colombia.
